The training a functional fitness policy covers

Barbell and Olympic lifting

Coaching the squat, deadlift, clean and snatch is covered, whether it's a class or a one-on-one session. Add property coverage for the racks, platforms and bumper plates.

HIIT and conditioning classes

A HIIT class can mix rower and bike intervals, sled pushes, kettlebell circuits and box jumps, and all of it is covered.

Bootcamps

Your policy covers bootcamps you run at the gym. To take one to a park or a school field, add off-site classes to your policy, which you can do after you buy.

CrossFit

CrossFit boxes program the same mix of lifting and conditioning. More on CrossFit gym insurance, including what affiliates are required to carry.

Small group training

If most of your sessions are small group or semi-private, see small group personal training insurance.

Sparring and contact boxing

Sparring and contact boxing aren't covered on a Strength and Conditioning policy. If you teach them, choose the martial arts gym type instead. More on martial arts gym insurance.

What's in a functional fitness policy

Most gyms start with liability and add property for the equipment.

General liability

Pays to defend the gym and settle the claim when a member, guest or visitor says they were injured because of your gym. The limit is $1M per occurrence, $3M aggregate.

Professional liability

Professional liability covers claims about the coaching itself, including programming and scaling. If a member blames a workout's programming for a shoulder injury, this is the coverage that responds.

Equipment and property

If a fire, a break-in or a burst pipe takes out your rig, rowers or plates, property coverage pays to replace them at today's prices.

Workers' compensation

Most states require workers' comp once you have coaches on payroll. It pays their medical bills and lost wages after a work injury, and we quote it as a separate policy.

Where claims come from in a functional fitness gym

  • A kettlebell rolls off a box mid-circuit and breaks the foot of the member next to it. That member sues the gym.
  • A member says a coach pushed her into a heavier clean than she was ready for and blames the coach for a back injury.
  • A visitor waiting for a friend trips over a sled strap by the front door and holds the gym responsible.
  • A strap on the rig gives way during ring rows, and the member sues over a shoulder injury.
  • Someone breaks in overnight and takes the rowers, the bikes and the front desk laptop.

Frequently asked questions

General liability for injury claims from members and visitors, and professional liability for your coaching. If you own your rigs, barbells and cardio machines, add property coverage. Most states also require workers' comp once you have coaches on payroll.

Is a bootcamp in the park covered?
Yes, once off-site classes are on your policy. Add them when you buy or any time after, and the classes you run in a park, at a beach or on a school field are covered. Competitions held somewhere else aren't covered and need their own event policy.
Are in-house competitions and throwdowns covered?
Yes, up to 100 participants. Past 100, four things decide it: whether the event is open to the public, has an entry fee beyond membership dues, charges spectators, or has an outside sponsor. If none of them apply, it's covered. If any do, the event needs its own one or two day policy. We can help you get the event policy.
Do my coaches need to be certified?
No. We don't require your coaches to be certified.
Are 1099 coaches covered?
A 1099 coach's coaching is covered under your professional liability, as long as they signed a contract-worker agreement with you before the incident. General liability is separate: each 1099 coach you add there costs $25.50 a year. W-2 coaches don't need anything extra.
Can I run kids' and teen classes?
Yes, for kids 2 and older. Gymnastics programs for kids are the exception: they aren't covered.
Can members train when no one is staffing the gym?
Yes, with the 24-hour access add-on. Unstaffed hours aren't covered without it. The add-on costs about 15% of your general liability premium.
Does the policy cover a CrossFit affiliate?
Yes. CrossFit asks affiliates for $1M per occurrence and $2M aggregate in general liability, and our policy carries $1M and $3M. CrossFit, LLC can be added as an additional insured at no cost. More on CrossFit affiliate insurance requirements.
Will this meet my landlord's insurance requirements?
Most leases ask for $1M per occurrence and $2M aggregate in general liability. Ours is $1M and $3M, and your landlord goes on as an additional insured at no charge. Waiver of subrogation and primary and non-contributory wording are available too.
