What does fitness studio insurance cover?

Fitness studio insurance from Gym Insurance by PushPress covers your studio's general liability and professional liability for the classes your instructors teach. You can add property coverage for your equipment.

Your policy covers the classes your studio runs, whether that's barre, spin, yoga, Pilates, dance fitness or rebounding, so you don't need a separate policy for each one.

The classes a studio policy covers

Barre

Barre classes are covered as studio fitness. Your barres, mats and props can go on the policy as studio property.

Indoor cycling and spin

Spin classes are covered as studio fitness. A room of bikes is usually the most expensive thing a cycling studio owns, so property coverage is worth adding: it replaces the bikes at replacement cost if a fire or a burst pipe damages them.

Yoga

Mat yoga is covered, and so are infrared and heated rooms. More on yoga studio insurance.

Pilates

Mat and reformer classes are covered. Add property coverage and your reformers are covered at replacement cost. More on Pilates studio insurance.

Dance fitness and Zumba

Dance fitness and Zumba classes are covered as studio fitness. More on dance studio insurance.

Rebounding

Rebounding classes on mini-trampolines are covered as studio fitness.

Aerial yoga, silks and pole

Aerial yoga, silks and pole are covered under a separate gym type, aerial yoga. If you teach them, choose aerial yoga when you get your quote. A studio fitness policy doesn't cover aerial classes.

The coverage a fitness studio needs

Four coverages do most of the work for a studio.

General liability

Covers injury claims from clients and visitors, like a client who slips on a wet floor and holds the studio responsible. Our limits are $1M per occurrence and $3M aggregate. Most leases ask for a $2M aggregate.

Professional liability

Covers claims about the teaching, like a client who blames an instructor's cueing for a strained back.

Equipment and property

Add property coverage and your bikes, reformers, barres, mats and sound system are covered at replacement cost after a fire, a burst pipe or a break-in.

Workers' compensation

Workers' comp covers instructors on your payroll who get hurt at work, and most states require it. We quote workers' comp as its own policy.

Claims a fitness studio sees

  • A barre client loses her footing on a polished floor, breaks an ankle and holds the studio responsible.
  • A spin rider says the instructor set up the bike wrong and sues over a knee injury.
  • A Pilates client says a cue on the reformer led to a back injury.
  • A fire next door spreads smoke through the studio and ruins the barres, mats and front desk computer.
  • A sprinkler line breaks overnight and ruins the reformer upholstery and the sound system.

How much does fitness studio insurance cost?

Liability coverage starts at $56 a month, and the typical fitness studio we insure pays about $130 a month. Generic small-business quotes for the same studio tend to run higher.

Frequently asked questions

What insurance does a fitness studio need?
A fitness studio usually needs general liability for client injury claims and professional liability for the classes taught there. Property coverage for your equipment is optional. Liability coverage from Gym Insurance by PushPress starts at $56 a month, or $80 with property.
How much is fitness studio insurance?
The typical fitness studio we insure pays about $130 a month, and coverage starts at $56. Most studios pay between $1,100 and $2,300 a year. See pricing by gym type.
Are my 1099 instructors covered?
Yes, with one condition. A 1099 instructor's teaching is covered under your professional liability once they've signed a contract-worker agreement with you, before anything happens. To put them on your general liability as well, add them for $25.50 a year each. Instructors on your payroll are covered automatically.
Can one policy cover barre, spin and yoga at the same studio?
Yes. A studio policy covers barre, spin, yoga, Pilates, dance fitness and rebounding classes together, so you don't need a policy for each. Aerial classes need the aerial yoga gym type, and regular sparring or contact boxing would make your studio a martial arts gym.
Do you cover aerial yoga, silks and pole?
Yes, under the aerial yoga gym type. Choose aerial yoga when you get your quote, because a standard studio fitness policy doesn't include aerial classes.
Do you cover a sauna or cold plunge at a fitness studio?
Yes. A sauna or cold plunge in your studio is covered as part of the studio. Cryotherapy chambers aren't covered. More on cold plunge and sauna coverage.
Do you cover kids' and parent-and-child classes?
Yes, for children ages 2 and up. We can't cover classes that include infants or animals, like baby yoga or goat yoga.
Does a studio policy cover teacher training?
Injury claims from a teacher training session are covered by your general liability, like any other class. Certifying new instructors isn't covered.
Can my studio be open 24 hours?
Yes. 24-hour or unstaffed access is an add-on, about 15% of your general liability premium. See 24-hour gym insurance.
Will your policy meet my lease requirements?
Usually, yes. Your landlord is added as an additional insured at no cost, and we can add waiver of subrogation and primary and non-contributory wording if your lease asks for them. Send us your lease if it has other requirements.
