Gym Insurance FAQ: What Happens When an Ambulance is Called?

April 7, 2025

We get asked questions like this a lot:

"In the event that someone has an issue and an ambulance needs to be called, would the ambulance and emergency care be covered? I want to feel free to call for help if something seems serious enough to warrant that—I don’t want to be thinking, ‘Oh, this might cost me or my family a few thousand dollars.’"

First off, we love that gym owners who care about their members’ safety are asking the right questions about gym insurance. It’s crucial to know that the right insurance for gyms empowers you to act fast in emergencies without worrying about unexpected costs.

Second, a robust gym liability insurance policy is designed with these situations in mind. A good policy includes a special sub-limit for medical expenses—a sort of “goodwill” reserve that you can tap into when needed. Whether it’s your basic insurance for a gym or a more detailed gym insurance plan, this sub-limit is there to ensure that, no matter who’s at fault, you can cover emergency care costs without hesitation.

Third, there’s an important distinction between a medical expenses sub-limit and an Accident Liability policy. Medical expenses coverage is typically part of your General Liability policy—an essential component of any solid gym insurance plan. In contrast, Accident Liability is a separate policy that, if added, will usually increase your overall insurance costs. While there are cases where a separate Accident Liability policy makes sense, we generally recommend sticking with a comprehensive gym liability insurance policy that covers all the basics without breaking the bank.

* A standard sub-limit for goodwill medical expenses is $5,000–$10,000. Our gym insurance policies all include a $10,000 medical expenses sub-limit. If this sub-limit isn’t explicitly listed in your policy documents, then you likely don’t have this benefit.

** Many traditional carriers or brokers (like Hiscox, Markel, and Francis L. Dean) may try to bundle an Accident Liability policy with your gym liability insurance quote, which raises your overall costs significantly. We generally don’t recommend this approach for most gym owners.
