8 Insurance FAQs Every Gym Owner Should Ask Before Adding a Cold Plunge

September 8, 2025

Muscle recovery is a critical part of effective exercise and one of the most popular therapies we see gyms adding is ice baths. Adding cold plunge(s) to your gym's recovery program is a big investment, so making sure you get it right is key. These are the top 8 frequently asked insurance questions we get from gym owners thinking about adding this refreshing recovery option to their gyms.

  1. Is a cold plunge a swimming pool? My insurance says swimming pools aren't covered.
    • This is a great question - and here's our great answer: We do not consider a cold plunge pool to be a swimming pool.
  2. Will I need to pay more for my insurance to offer ice baths as a muscle recovery therapy?
    • Not if you bought your policy from GymInsurance.com! We're super proud to be able to support you by automatically including coverage for this popular therapy in all of our liability policies.
  3. My gym is open 24-hours. Can I let people use the cold plunge pool without staff present?
    • This will likely vary between insurance companies - we can only speak from our experience - and with Gym Insurance+, we don't restrict the hours you can have ice bathing and recovery available at your gym, even during unsupervised hours. We think it's a good idea in general to have clear safety guidelines for your members to follow, but as your insurance company, we're happy to be able to support that 2am muscle recovery plunge.
  4. Do members need to sign a special waiver to use the cold plunge?
    • We don't require a special waiver for cold plunge muscle recovery, although other insurance providers might have a different requirement. It's good idea to double check, especially if you're not using Gym Insurance+ for your gym's liability coverage.
  5. Do I need to register my ice bath with the local Department of Health?
    • No registrations are required for your insurance with us. Depending on your state or town, you might have to register your plunge pool with your local DoH. This varies on a local level and we recommend asking your cold plunge manufacturer what the guidelines are. In our experience, ice bath companies that serve commercial gyms will know this and be able to easily help you with any approvals needed.
  6. Am I required to service my cold plunge a certain number of times per week?
    • Not by us! Your plunge's manufacturer might require logs to honor their warranty, but for your insurance, there are no servicing requirements.
  7. Does my warranty cover use in my commercial gym?
    • This is a great question to ask the company you buy your cold plunge from!
  8. Which cold plunge pool should I pick?
    • We're big fans of Plunge.com pools. Not only are their pools super nice, easy to clean, and built for commercial use, their team is also full of fellow gym owners and they're insured by Gym Insurance+! We honestly didn't plan that - it just happened because we're such cool people who love supporting small gyms :)
